Rummy Game Rules
Rummy is a popular skill-based card game played with 2 to 6 players and one or two standard 52-card decks, including jokers. The primary objective is to form valid sets and sequences with the cards dealt to you and declare your hand before your opponents.
1. Objective of the Game
The main goal in rummy is to arrange all 13 cards into valid combinations of sequences and/or sets. A valid declaration must include:
- At least two sequences
- At least one pure sequence (without any joker)
- Remaining cards can be arranged in either sequences or sets
2. Understanding Sequences
A sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. There are two types of sequences:
- Pure Sequence: A sequence formed without using a joker. Example: 5♥, 6♥, 7♥
- Impure Sequence: A sequence formed using one or more jokers. Example: 5♠, 6♠, Joker
3. Understanding Sets
A set is a group of three or four cards of the same rank but from different suits. Example: 7♣, 7♠, 7♦. You can also use jokers in sets (but not more than one joker in a single set).
4. Use of Jokers
Jokers play a vital role in rummy. There are two types:
- Printed Joker: The joker card included in the deck
- Wild Joker: A randomly chosen card from the deck at the start of each game that acts as a joker
Jokers can substitute for any card when forming impure sequences or sets, but cannot be used in a pure sequence.
5. Dealing the Cards
Each player is dealt 13 cards. The remaining cards form the closed deck, and one card is placed face up to create the open deck. A wild joker is also declared.
6. Drawing and Discarding
Players take turns drawing one card from either the open or closed deck and discarding one card to the open deck. The game continues in this way until one player makes a valid declaration.
7. Declaration
Once a player arranges all their cards in valid sequences and/or sets, they can click “Declare”. The system will verify the hand, and if valid, the player wins the game. An invalid declaration results in a penalty.
8. Scoring System
The winner receives 0 points. The losing players are given points based on the values of unmatched cards. Scoring rules include:
- Face cards (J, Q, K, A) = 10 points
- Number cards = face value
- Jokers = 0 points
- Maximum loss per hand = 80 points
